My hero

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Tim Minchin’s work.  I stumbled upon him by accident while bored at work one day and have been absolutely mesmerized by the guy’s playing.

I’ve been playing piano for roughly 25 years.  It has always been one of my favorite instruments, but in the last few years I’ve felt like I haven’t really gone anywhere with it.  I’m a fan of Ben Folds, but I’ve never felt especially inspired by his style.

Mr. Minchin has reminded what fun the piano can be.  That and I like songs about blow up sex dolls.

The End of the experiment

My last post was about installing Ubuntu on two computers for two co-workers of mine.

Both co-workers have since switched back to Windows.    One of them even managed to remove network manager and somehow slow the system to a fucking crawl.

Can’t say that I’m sad that this is over.  After weeks of solving their problems I am tired of dealing with their computers.

Does this make me a bad person?

I installed Ubuntu to two co-worker’s computers yesterday.

I know what you’re thinking: “time has lost his fucking mind”, but hear me out.

Both of these co-workers requested that Linux be installed to their machines.  One has a Dell desktop, the other an Acer AspireOne.  Neither knew about Ubuntu beforehand, just what they had heard about Linux, so Ubuntu seemed to be the best choice, being Linux for Wimps and whatnot.

My stance on Linux is pretty well known.  I do NOT feel that it is appropriate for these two computer illiterate knuckleheads to be using it because I’m quite confident that it will just cause more problems down the road (for me and them).

So why did I do this?

Simple: I’m using this as an experiment.  My friends, I’ve found two willing (but unwitting) guinea pigs to see firsthand what happens when you install Ubuntu on the machines of people that haven’t the first clue about computers in general.   I will be asking them frequently what their thoughts are concerning it’s ease of use, stability, etc.

Of course I’ll be reporting my findings, whether they support my admittedly pessimistic predictions or not.

Who needs a GUI anyway?

A quick list of CLI programs that I used on a daily basis:

htop
iftop
snownews
screen
irssi
links

Now, I’m not one of these hardcore guys that has totally eschewed any kind of GUI. I do just about everything in Openbox because, while the above programs serve their purposes well, I want graphics and flash when I hop online.

So what’s the point of this post? There isn’t one. You were already warned.

I work for idiots.

But who doesn’t?

When your entire business model relies on underpricing the competition so severely that they can’t compete, suddenly raising the prices to where you can easily be undercut strikes me as the wrong move.  Yet that’s the decision that was handed down not long ago.  We’re talking about a significant price hike.  The huge disadvantage is that, while our competition can negotiate price on the spot, we cannot thus presenting them with an excellent opportunity to cut our throats.

Oh well.

Goddamnit.

Teehee!

Teehee!

Is this thing on?

Viper Chief gave me a blog.  I don’t know why since I don’t have anything to say that anyone would ever find the slightest bit interesting.  I don’t even write for Linsux, damnit.

I guess I will sometimes update this and ramble incoherently about how much I don’t know about computers and my job.  Or something.
